Lunaria Annua
2023/2024
Suspended Sculpture (lunaria seed pods, artist’s hair)
Dimensions variable

Lunaria Annua is a modular, suspended sculpture that can be adjusted in scale to seamlessly fit the designated exhibition space.

Wild-foraged lunaria seed membranes are intricately woven with strands of my own hair. I collected the membranes after they had fulfilled their cyclical purpose, having withstood heavy rain and wind to protect the seeds. Such an organic matter is then intertwined with human hair in a series of eighty threads. Though seemingly fragile, these materials conceal an underlying strength, manifesting an interplay between vulnerability and endurance, permanence and ephemerality.

Juxtaposed with the imposing architecture of the Arsenale, Lunaria Annua’s ethereal quality challenges conventional notions of sculpture as a monumental effort. This contrast emphasizes how something apparently insubstantial can still have an impact in advocating different forms of strength.

The sustainability of the work is evident not only in its organic composition but also in its ease of transportation. Weighing only a few grams, Lunaria Annua is effortlessly transported by me. The work is intentionally designed to be manageable without external support, emphasizing that my existence, within space and time, is the ultimate agent of creation and expression of the interaction with other organic bodies.
